World Day of the Sick

The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes calls the whole church-community to pray for the sick among us. We learn from today’s gospel that we cannot mourn because the Bridegroom is with us. Yet, some seem stripped of God’s sensible presence when they are sick; they mourn. They need us to pray for them. The fast that God wants, spoken through Isaiah, is sharing. God wants us to break the yoke of oppression, bring the homeless poor into our homes and hearts, cover the naked. "Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing will spring up quickly."

Today we honor and comfort and pray for the sick. Let us also pray for those wounded from violence around the world; for the diseased in refugee camps and in southern Asia; for those with AIDS; for all the children who have no medical care; for those sick from hunger and thirst; for the mentally and emotionally ill; etc, etc, etc... Yes, today our prayer is telling God. Jesus "lives to make intercession for us," we are assured in Hebrews, and we join our petitions with his.
