PRAYER / Lenten Reflection 2005

Monday, March 14, 2005

In both readings we meet two women accused of adultery. Young Daniel acts as defense attorney for Susanna and trips up her accusers. Jesus too defends a woman, asking who dares throw a first stone. John’s gospel promises us an Advocate too, the Spirit who protects us when maligned, who catches our tears of hurt or shame, who warms us when the cold judgment of others freezes us out.

Offer God your defenses, the ways in which you protect yourself against hurt, fear, others or even, perhaps, God. Ask God to transform them through the defense attorney, the Spirit, so that you may use them more freely and flexibly in your interactions.

"Defend me, O God, and plead my cause." And save us from ever throwing stones!
