PRAYER / Lenten Reflection 2005

Friday, March 18, 2005

Jeremiah and Jesus are under attack. Persecution escalates. "All my close friends are watching for me to stumble," Jeremiah laments. Jesus asks, "For which of my good works are you going to stone me?" Jesus continues, "If you don’t believe in me, believe in the works." In other words, our inner life and union with God is expressed in our service.

Let your imagination take you around the world where people are persecuted because they are poor, vulnerable, disabled; abused perhaps even in their own homes. Feel in your imagination the pain of being attacked for no fault of your own. Ask Jesus to let you identify more closely with his body.

Holy Spirit, deepen our compassion and empathy. Let us feel with those who suffer, and find some small way to serve them.
